Development Manager - EMEA

POSITION SUMMARY

The Manager will be responsible for supporting the members of the Development team in their efforts to identify and pursue new business opportunities for all of Marriott’s brands across the EMEA region and contribute to various strategic initiatives.

Success in the position demands a driving focus on creation of shareholder value through the pursuit of new projects, a proactive disposition, a willingness to champion new business opportunities, an ability to juggle many projects simultaneously, an enthusiasm for working on a small, focused team and a passion for the work we do.

The position designation (Manager) will be commensurate with the application’s experience.

Scope/Business Context

The addition of new hotels is one of the principal drivers of Marriott International’s earnings growth and an important element in progressing the product quality, operating excellence, distribution power and brand equity of Marriott’s lodging system. The company’s unit growth strategy focuses primarily on acquisition of management contracts and licensing of our hotel brands to third party owner-operators under franchise agreements.  The role performs a critical supporting role in identifying, generating and structuring deals for MI’s brands and successfully closing on opportunities for new hotels, and building win-win relationships with new and existing hotel owners and franchisees.  It requires a team player who will feel comfortable working with many developers from different sub-regions.

CORE WORK ACTIVITIES

Market Research & Analysis

  • Extract, prepare, and analyze EMEA-wide market data using tools such as STR, Salesforce, and Tableau 
  • Present analytical findings in a clear and concise manner for senior management decision-making 
  • Work with the EMEA CDO and other team members on strategic, long-term projects to increase Marriott shareholder value.  Questions posed might be, for example, should Marriott enter the hostel space in the EMEA region?  Should Marriott develop additional brands for the EMEA area?  What internal process changes can be made to enable more new brand-accretive deals?

Project & Deal Support

  • Support the preparation of marketing and presentation materials for development opportunities 
  • Contribute to deal-related activities and special projects as needed 
  • Review and analyze potential hotel conversions and new build opportunities, for integration into any of Marriott’s brands.
  • Develop the appropriate business relationship with Marriott’s EMEA Development team members to enable them to be more successful in closing new deal opportunities. In working with the Marriott developers, also develop relationships with potential owners, capital providers and partners, in order to build loyalty and preference for our company and brands. 

Collaboration & Communication

  • Coordinate with internal departments to facilitate information exchange 
  • Support internal and external processes, helping to resolve challenges as they arise 
  • Attendance and support the team at relevant hospitality events throughout the EMEA region.
  • Share leads for other Marriott brand or product opportunities with appropriate personnel.
  • Performs other duties as appropriate related to enhancing Marriott’s growth in the EMEA region.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Perform other duties and projects to support Marriott’s growth across the EMEA region
  • Ensure compliance with Marriott International Continent Office policies and procedures

  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by management.
  • Complies with Marriott International Hotels Limited Continent Office policies and procedures.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

Experience:

  • 1-3 years of business experience with real estate development, financial or hotel industry experience is preferred, but not required for an outstanding candidate.

Skills and Knowledge 

  • Strong communication skills (verbal, listening, writing).
  • Excellent inter-personal skills and capability of both building lasting internal/external relationships and “selling” Marriott’s brands to third-parties.
  • Enthusiastic, energetic, proactive outlook and approach to professional life is essential.
  • An ability to work in a team environment with a small and diverse team is critical.
  • Mature, professional demeanor, capable of expressing confident, independent judgment.

Education or Certification 

  • University degree in Real Estate, Hotel Administration or Business Administration.
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken)
  • Ability to speak one or more additional European languages is a plus, but not a requirement.
