Dream destination: It was Hawaii, but I have already fulfilled that one! Staying in one of those bungalows over the water in Bali might be my next dream vacation spot.
Drink or treat of choice: A good taco or some enchiladas always hit the spot for me. Of course, always accompanied by a good Paloma.
Obi left his home country of Puerto Rico 18 years ago and started his career in hospitality as a server at Bleu, one of The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes’ restaurants, but from day one he knew he wanted to become a leader. A mission he’s since achieved.
Obi’s drive and determination helped him jump-not-walk up the career ladder, going from restaurant server to supervisor, then Restaurant Manager, Director of Outdoor Dining Operations, Banquet Manager, Banquet Director, Assistant Director of Food and Beverage, Director of Food and Beverage — and as of this summer, Hotel Manager.

One of the keys to his success and a piece of advice he gives to anyone who wants to have a career like his is to focus on being the best at your current role, no matter how far you are from your goal.

“In my experience, striving to be the best in every role I have has opened up new doors of opportunity for me,” he says. “When I started as a server here, I used to stay late and organize our side stations or be the last one to go home after a long, busy day.”
Besides being able to buy his family home and support his kid’s dreams and education, for Obi, the biggest highlights of his journey have been the opportunities to learn and grow.

“Working with Marriott has allowed me to grow professionally and personally. During my time with this company, I’ve been able to travel the world with my family and show them experiences I could only wish for when I was growing up,” he says. “When I first started back in 2007, this was a job. I did not imagine that it would turn into a career and then lead me to where I am today.”

What is your favorite part of the job?
My favorite part of my job is having the opportunity to teach and develop others. I have been fortunate to grow in my career within the company, so I take great pride in being able to pay that forward and help others become better leaders, operators, and hoteliers. I love that the food and beverage department is constantly evolving. There are always new opportunities to be creative, try new spirits and food, and provide exceptional guest experiences. It never ends; there are always chances to improve guest service, introduce new products, and raise the bar for guest experiences. Being able to do this daily makes me extremely proud.

How have you been provided with the training and support needed to grow in your career?
I’ve been lucky enough to participate in various training and development programs throughout my career. One of the most helpful programs was the Emerging Leader Program (ELP) at The Ritz-Carlton, which gave me a better understanding of my role as a senior leader. Another great experience was attending the Marriott Boot Camp for senior executives, where I made valuable connections with people I still keep in touch with today.
What advice would you give someone who wants a job with Marriott?

What’s your favorite part of working at Grande Lakes Orlando?
One thing I love about working here is the people. Over the years, I have had the privilege of meeting so many exceptional individuals, learning from them, and growing with them. I have seen so many great leaders move on to big roles in the organization, from General Manager roles to many senior positions above property. The many unique experiences I have had with these people make me proud to be a part of this team.
When have you felt like a part of a community at Marriott or Grande Lakes Orlando?
I recall when we had to call upon every available lady and gentleman to transform a meeting room into a dinner event for our guests. I also remember the times when we participated in community footprints feeding the homeless, working with Habitat for Humanity, and partnering with local schools. The truth is, The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes feels like family to me after all these years. I have witnessed many of our ladies and gentlemen start at the resort and grow, and now I see their children and families working with us. This fills me with immense pride.

How has Marriott supported your family?
Working at Marriott we have been able to support our kids in following their dreams with a great education and the resources they need to pursue their dreams. Our son Max has been passionate about music since middle school; he participated in band and, later in high school, the marching band. Today, Max is a United States Marine and continues his passion for music in the Marine Corps Band. Working for Marriott has also supported us in purchasing our home, where we have created so many special memories over the years.
