To say that Mayela is part of the Westin Reserva Conchal‘s roots is an understatement — the laundry assistant was working there even before the first trees were planted at the dreamy, tropical resort in Guanacaste, Costa Rica.
When Mayela was a young girl, she worked picking cotton to support her family and later as a housekeeper at a private residence. One day, an acquaintance told her a big new hotel (what is now the Westin Reserva Conchal) was being built nearby — Mayela knew then and there she wanted to be part of it. “I used to pass by the construction site on the bus and dream about working there,” she says.

Although she didn’t have hotel experience at the time, she decided to go to the hotel in person and request an application, but unfortunately, the recruiting fair had already passed. She waited for the next one — even traveling to the town of Filadelfia, in Guanacaste, for an interview — and after all the obstacles and challenges, Mayela passed all the interviews, and her life was forever changed.
“After the first interview, they told me they would call me, but I was so nervous. I didn’t have a job at the time, and I really needed one,” she remembers. “I am a single mother, so when they called me, I couldn’t believe it. Thank God they did, I never thought it would happen.”
Once the new hotel’s final team was selected, everyone began work on the sprawling property. “There were 800 new employees at the first meeting,” she remembers. Everyone helped, from planting trees to building new roads and, closer to the hotel’s opening, getting each and every room ready to receive the first guests. The resort finally opened its doors in May of 1996.
Mayela’s hotel journey started in the laundry department: “I had never seen machines so big and so new until then. I was shocked.” She spent her first three months on the job in laundry and then was transferred to the valet department, which focuses on the guests’ daily experience at the hotel. Mayela has held the role of laundry valet assistant ever since, taking care of the clothes of the guests that use Marriott´s dry cleaner’s service.
“I can’t even count the number of wedding gowns I have gotten ready at the hotel,” she says. What has changed since she started almost 30 years ago? The looks!
“Guests used to dress much more elegantly back then, they’d wear very delicate clothes that were very hard to clean and iron, but now they mostly wear athletic clothes all the time.”

How have you felt appreciated in your job as a Marriott laundry assistant?
All of my managers have congratulated me for my job but there was a special one, Mr. Meyer — he was the first general manager when Westin took over the hotel and I was in charge of attending to his laundry. Every week, when his assistant brought me Mr. Meyer’s clothes, they came with a box of chocolates and a note thanking me for my work. And then one week he came to thank me in person. He told me his clothes felt like when his mom had them washed and ready and that he was so thankful. I couldn’t help but cry! It was beautiful, I felt so proud and grateful.
What would you say to someone who is looking for a job like yours?
I would tell them to ask themselves “Do you love this work?” Because if you don’t do your job with love, it’s not going to work in the long run. I love it! I feel like I have the same attitude towards my job that I had on day one. Si no hay amor no hay nada. (Translation: If there is no love, there is nothing.)
A lot of associates say they feel like being with family at work, how would you describe Marriott’s culture?
I would live at the hotel if I could! Everyone is so nice.

What is your favorite part of the job?
I come from a very humble and traditional family and my parents never allowed me to go anywhere so I’m very happy to be out and about and surrounded by people every day.
When have you felt supported at Marriott?
Like I said before, I’m mom and dad in my family, and this job has allowed me to educate my son and my daughter. That’s all I cared about! When they were little, I prayed to God to keep this job so I could support them and I am so grateful I could do that and I’m still working.

Decir que Mayela forma parte parte de las raíces del hotel Westin Reserva Conchal es quedarse corto. Esta asistente de lavandería trabajaba allí incluso antes de que se plantaran los primeros árboles en este resort tropical de ensueño situado en Guanacaste, Costa Rica.
Cuando Mayela era una niña, trabajaba recogiendo algodón para mantener a su familia y más tarde trabajó como empleada del hogar en una residencia privada. Un día, una conocida le contó que cerca de donde ella vivía se estaba construyendo un gran hotel nuevo (lo que hoy día es el Westin Reserva Conchal) y Mayela supo en ese momento que quería formar parte del equipo inaugural del hotel. “Solía pasar en el autobús por la obra donde estaban construyéndolo y soñaba con trabajar allí”, dice.
Aunque por aquel entonces no tenía experiencia profesional en hoteles, decidió presentarse en persona en el hotel y solicitar una aplicación, pero desafortunadamente la feria de reclutamiento ya había pasado. Esperó a la siguiente, incluso viajó a localidad de Filadelfia para tener una entrevista con el equipo de recursos humanos, y después de todos los obstáculos y desafíos, Mayela pasó todas las entrevistas y su vida cambió para siempre.
“Después de la primera entrevista, me dijeron que me llamarían, pero yo estaba muy nerviosa. No tenía trabajo en ese momento, y realmente lo necesitaba”, recuerda. “Soy madre soltera, así que cuando me llamaron, no podía creerlo. Gracias a Dios que lo hicieron, nunca pensé que sucedería”.
Una vez que se seleccionó el equipo definitivo que inauguraría el nuevo hotel, todos comenzaron a trabajar en la inmensa propiedad. “En la primera reunión éramos 800 nuevos empleados”, recuerda. Todos ayudaron, desde plantar árboles hasta construir nuevos caminos y, cuando se acercaba la apertura del hotel, a preparar todas y cada una de las habitaciones hasta el último detalle para recibir a los primeros huéspedes. El resort finalmente abrió sus puertas en mayo de 1996.
La carrera de Mayela en el mundo de los hoteles comenzó en el departamento de lavandería. “Nunca había visto lavadoras tan grandes y tan modernas hasta entonces. Me quedé impactada.” Pasó sus primeros tres meses de trabajo en el servicio de lavandería y luego fue transferida al departamento de valet, que se enfoca en la experiencia diaria de los huéspedes en el hotel. Desde entonces Mayela ha trabajado como asistente de lavandería, cuidando la ropa de los huéspedes que utilizan el servicio de tintorería de Marriott.
“No puedo ni contar la cantidad de vestidos de novia que han pasado por mis manos en el hotel”, dice. Y ¿qué ha cambiado desde que comenzó hace casi 30 años? ¡Los looks!
“Los invitados solían vestirse mucho más elegantemente en ese entonces, usaban vestidos largos, elegantes, muy finos. Una ropa muy delicada que era muy difícil de lavar y planchar, pero ahora la mayoría usan ropa deportiva todo el tiempo”.

¿Cómo se ha sentido apreciada en su trabajo como asistente de lavandería?
Todos mis jefes me han felicitado por mi trabajo, pero hubo uno especial, el Sr. Meyer. Él fue el primer gerente cuando Westin se hizo cargo del hotel y yo estaba a cargo de hacer su colada. Cada semana, cuando su asistente me traía la ropa del Sr. Meyer, la bolsa venía acompañada de una caja de chocolates y una nota agradeciéndome mi trabajo. Una semana, vino él mismo a la lavandería a agradecerme en persona. Me dijo que su ropa se sentía como cuando su mamá la lavaba y la preparaba y que estaba muy agradecido. ¡No pude evitar llorar! Fue hermoso, me sentí muy orgullosa y agradecida.
¿Qué le diría a alguien que quiera conseguir un trabajo como el suyo?
Les diría que se preguntaran a sí mismos “¿Te encanta este trabajo?” Porque si no haces tu trabajo con amor, a la larga no va a funcionar. ¡A mi encanta! Siento que tengo la misma actitud hacia mi trabajo que tenía el primer día que empecé. Si no hay amor no hay nada.
Muchos de nuestros empleados dicen que se sienten como en familia en el trabajo ¿cómo describiría la cultura de Marriott?
¡Yo viviría en el hotel si pudiera! Todo el mundo es tan agradable.
¿Cuál es su parte favorita del trabajo?
Vengo de una familia muy humilde y tradicional y mis padres nunca me permitieron ir a ningún lado, así que estoy muy feliz de estar afuera y rodeada de gente todos los días.
¿Cuándo se ha sentido apoyada en Marriott?
Como dije antes, en mi familia yo soy la mamá y el papá, y este trabajo me ha permitido educar a mi hijo y a mi hija por mi misma. ¡Eso es todo lo que me importaba! Cuando eran pequeños, le pedía a Dios que me mantuviera este trabajo para poder mantenerlos y estoy muy agradecida de poder haberlo hecho y todavía seguir trabajando.
