Even though Lucas built a successful career in the property management industry, he always knew his heart was in hospitality. So, six years ago he dared to do a career 180 and landed a role as a Marriott sales manager in the DC area. In his time with the company, Lucas has found impact and motivation in his role — and has even been awarded Sales Manager of the Quarter — but he’s found the biggest reward beyond sales accomplishments: his involvement with Marriott’s Black Associate Resource Group.
“I am a firm believer that passion leads to purpose,” he says. And it was his passion for inclusivity and personal development that drove him to join Marriott’s Black ARG. “Being a member of the Black ARG is beyond fulfilling and gives me a purpose beyond my daily responsibilities as a sales manager,” he says.

Lucas is currently the ARG’s Activations Continent Partner for US and Canada East areas, and in this role he provides perspective and cultural nuances when planning activations for the group. “I work closely with the leadership team to ensure that our activations are inclusive and representative of the diverse Black community within the company. This involves collaborating with various departments to organize events, workshops, and initiatives that celebrate Black culture and promote diversity and inclusion.”

One of the most rewarding aspects of Lucas’ involvement in the Black ARG is the opportunity to support other Black associates within the company. “I have had the privilege of helping create a supportive network where individuals can share their experiences, seek advice, and find opportunities for professional development.”

How has being part of the Black ARG enriched your Marriott experience?
It has provided me with a platform to connect with like-minded individuals who share similar values and goals. Also, being a member of the Black ARG has given me the opportunity to contribute to meaningful initiatives and projects that aim to promote diversity and inclusion within the company. This has been incredibly fulfilling and has allowed me to make a tangible impact on the organization. The resources and support provided by the Black ARG have been invaluable in my personal and professional growth. Being a part of this resource group has equipped me with the tools and knowledge to further my career within Marriott. My involvement in the Black ARG has not only allowed me to contribute to a cause I am passionate about but has also enriched my experience within the organization by providing me with a supportive community, meaningful opportunities, and valuable resources for personal and professional development.

In what ways has the Black ARG contributed to your personal and professional growth?
By providing a platform and safe space for myself and other like-minded associates. It has allowed us to connect, share experiences, and support each other in our personal and professional development. Through the group, I have been able to access valuable resources, mentorship, and networking opportunities that I hope will help me navigate my career here at Marriott. The group has also provided me with a greater understanding and appreciation for diversity and inclusion, which has been instrumental in shaping my personal growth and perspective.
How do you think the ARG has contributed to fostering a more inclusive and diverse workplace?
The ARG is setting the foundation for an inclusive and diverse workplace by creating a safe space and environment for associates to gather and express concerns that may only be applicable to Black associates. The ARG provides a platform for open dialogue, where Black associates can share their experiences, challenges, and perspectives without fear of judgment or discrimination. This fosters a sense of belonging and understanding within the workplace, ultimately leading to a more inclusive and diverse environment.
The ARG also helps to raise awareness and educate other associates and allies about the unique experiences and issues faced by Black employees. This increased understanding can lead to greater empathy, support, and allyship from colleagues, contributing to a more inclusive and supportive workplace culture. Furthermore, the ARG can influence company policies and practices by advocating for changes that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion. By amplifying the voices of Black associates, the ARG can drive meaningful change within the organization, creating a more equitable and diverse workplace for all.

What are your future goals within the Associate Resource Group, and how do you plan to continue contributing?
Simply by being a beacon for other Black associates who need help navigating their career here at Marriott. We can all lend a helping hand no matter our position or title. I plan to continue contributing by actively sharing my own experiences and insights and advocating for diversity and inclusion within the company. I also hope to take on leadership roles within the Associate Resource Group, helping to organize events, workshops, and initiatives that support the professional development and well-being of Black associates. My goal is to create a supportive and empowering environment where all Black associates feel valued, heard, and have the opportunity to thrive in their careers at Marriott. I plan to be intentional in my efforts in hopes that it encourages others to get involved. „Each one, teach one.”
What have been the highlights of your experience as a Marriott associate?
My experience here at Marriott has been extremely rewarding. Besides my daily tasks as a Sales Manager I have had the opportunity to work on some amazing projects. Some of which include being a member of the Black Associate Resource Group Activations Committee, Co-Chair of the Brands & Bonvoy Workgroup and TakeCare Champion. These opportunities have allowed me to collaborate with colleagues from different departments and regions and have given me a broader perspective on the company. The support and encouragement from my team and leadership have been invaluable, and I feel like my contributions are truly valued here.
Overall, my experience as a Marriott associate has been fulfilling and challenging. I am proud to be a part of this organization and look forward to continuing to contribute to its success in any capacity offered to me. In addition, the company’s dedication to diversity and inclusion is something that I deeply appreciate. Marriott’s efforts to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for all associates and guests align with my own values, and I am proud to be a part of an organization that prioritizes these important initiatives.

What is your favorite part of the job?
Workdays and site visits with my fellow sales managers and visiting the various hotels within the corporate portfolio. There is nothing like experiencing the hotels firsthand. It allows me to confidently sell our product and build a genuine rapport with our clients through personal experience. I also love the challenge of finding creative solutions for our clients and exceeding their expectations. It’s incredibly rewarding to see the impact of our hard work when we successfully close a deal and provide an exceptional experience for our clients. The sense of accomplishment and the relationships built along the way make every day at Marriott a fulfilling and exciting adventure.
What does a good day at work look like for you?
When I successfully close a deal with a new client or secure a repeat booking from an existing client. I lead with this simple sales mantra „ABC, Always Be Closing”. In addition, a good day at work involves collaborating with my team to strategize and brainstorm new ideas to attract and retain clients. It’s about fostering a positive and productive work environment where everyone feels motivated and supported. Ultimately, a good day at work is when I feel like I’ve made a meaningful impact, whether it’s by driving revenue for the hotel, building lasting partnerships, or simply delivering outstanding service. It’s about constantly striving to improve and achieve success, both for myself and for the company.
What has been the proudest moment of your career so far?
One of my proudest moments thus far was being awarded Sales Manager of the Quarter. It was a validation of the hard work and dedication I had put into my job. The recognition from my superiors was incredibly gratifying and it motivated me to continue striving for excellence in my career. It was a proud moment that I will always cherish, and it has inspired me to set even higher goals for myself in the future.

How would you describe Marriott’s culture?
The Marriott culture is inclusive and growth oriented. The company values diversity and encourages employees to bring their unique perspectives to the table. There is a strong emphasis on teamwork and collaboration, with a focus on supporting each other to achieve success. Marriott also prioritizes personal and professional development, providing ample opportunities for learning and advancement within the company. Overall, the culture at Marriott is one of support, growth, and inclusivity, making it a great place to work and thrive.
How have you used the Marriott Explore Rate?
I have used my Marriott Explore Rate mostly to visit family and friends. Typically, over the holidays. I’ve also used the travel discount for business trips, which has been incredibly helpful in saving on accommodation costs. The Explore Rate has allowed me to stay at some amazing Marriott properties that I might not have been able to afford otherwise. It’s been a great way to experience luxury and comfort while staying within my budget. I’m looking forward to using it for more leisure travel in the future and exploring new destinations!
