How This Housekeeping Coordinator Faced Her Fears and Gave Her Career a 180

As a company, Marriott is hyper focused on growing great leaders, and the way we do that is by encouraging all associates, regardless of title or position, to be curious, courageous and connected. So, what does this actually look like in practice? Well, it looks like Carolina.

Carolina had been working as a Marriott housekeeper for 10 years, and the idea of moving into a leadership role hadn’t even crossed her mind — but her managers at the JW Marriott Downtown Chicago knew she had what it takes, which is why they offered her a position on the other side of the department as a Housekeeping Coordinator.

“I was so worried and scared. It was something new for me, she says. “I had been cleaning rooms for 20 years. Being in an office, using the computer, or answering the phone sounded a little scary to me. It was a 180-degree change.”

What did she do then? She asked her kids. “They said ‘Yes, mom, it’s an opportunity you shouldn’t miss’. And then I took it, because I feel that in life you only get opportunities like this once. And now I’m so happy I took this challenge. I feel blessed every day and grateful for having said yes.”

Today, Carolina’s greatest satisfaction is knowing that by making that scary decision she was able to teach and show her children that no matter what the challenge is, when you want something, you can accomplish it.

“Limits do not exist. Everything is in your head. If you say, ‘I can’t do this, then you won’t be able to,’” says Carolina. “But if you want to do it, I think everything is possible.”

Her first day as a Housekeeping Coordinator came and the systems went down. Instead of panicking, and because she had such support and trust from her team and her managers, Carolina got to work with what she had, just like she had learned to do for all those years in housekeeping. Instead of wasting time waiting for the system to be fixed, she started to do it by hand and got her team of housekeepers to work while the system was down. Everyone around her was amazed at her decisiveness and pragmatism.

Carolina brings this attitude to everything she does. “[The housekeepers in my team] tell me, ‘Thank you very much, Carolina, because you are the only person who comes up [to the rooms] and helps us,” she says, adding that this perspective is all thanks to own robust housekeeping experience.

“I understand that they are not robots, and they can’t do everything in a minute. I tell them to start with the bathroom and I make the bed, vacuum, and we do it together! They know it is not part of my job, but I always try to solve their problems,” she says. “If I come and help them, we will both win. They’ll get more accomplished and without so much stress.” Carolina’s can-do attitude is infectious, and her impact is great. Her team members know they can go to her for support. “They talk to me in Spanish, and they ask me for help sometimes when they need to communicate with someone else in the hotel and they don’t know how to. They know they can always talk to me.”

Her inspiration extends beyond work at the hotel — many on her team have even obtained their citizenship after watching Carolina go through that process successfully: “I tell them, if I can do it, you can too!” — and even beyond her team to her own family. Her 25-year-old son as well as her husband now work at Marriott, too!

What does a day at work look like for you now?

We treat the hotel as our house. We take care of it and clean it like we would our own. For that reason, I like to get here early to start my day. Overnight, the front desk manager will be updating the room’s status, so I know where we’re at in the morning — so by 6 a.m., I’ve checked all the statuses. Then, I check if we have enough staff to clean the rooms. If we don’t, I start calling people in. At 8 a.m., housemen start to board — they strip the rooms before the housekeepers come to clean. All through the day I answer calls from everyone. I am the connection for all the departments when they have a request. That is actually one of the best things. All the managers know me and know that I can help them.

What is your favorite part of your day?

When I come in, because I’m alone for two hours. I have a few moments to myself to set up the day for success.

When have you felt supported by Marriott?

Every day since day one. From my first day they showed me how everything worked, the system. I was very nervous in the beginning, but my managers told me “Don’t worry,” I’ve had their support every minute. Even at the interview they told me “Don’t worry, if you get the job, we will teach you.” Every manager has always had my back. I have a new director now and even he tells me all the time “ask me whatever you need.” We’re learning together, we help each other out, he supports me a lot and I help him too.

What surprised you most about working at Marriott?

The respect we have for each other! We are all there for each other in work and in life. The housekeepers respect me, and I love that I can inspire them.

What motivates you at work?

Working here has made me realize I have no limits. My confidence is soaring. However, when my team says I make their jobs better. That is the best gift to me.

What is your favorite part of working at Marriott?

Being a leader. I was born for that and now I’m recognized for what I do. Also, everyone always says ‘thank you.’ When we show gratitude to each other we understand where each other is coming from.

What would you say to someone who is thinking of a career change or who is looking for a job like yours?

To take risks. If you don’t take challenges, you will never know if you were able to do it. Sometimes fear paralyzes you and tells you, ‘No, I’m afraid of failing’. But you will never know if you will fail if you don’t try. I would advise them to take the challenge, that it will be difficult, because any change is new. But always, always, always take a risk, because if not, you will never know if it was for you.

I went to Europe with my family. We went to Paris, Prague, Germany and Amsterdam! We also went to Cancun. I loved the friendly people at the JW Marriott Cancun!

¿Cómo es para ti un día de trabajo?

Tratamos al hotel como si fuera nuestra casa. Lo cuidamos y lo limpiamos como lo haríamos con nuestro hogar. Por esa razón me gusta llegar temprano para comenzar mi día. Durante la noche, el gerente de la recepción actualiza el estado de las habitaciones, así por la mañana sé en qué estado están y a las 6 a. m. ya he chequeado en qué estado están todos los cuartos. Luego compruebo si tenemos suficiente personal para limpiar las habitaciones. Si no lo tenemos, empiezo a hacer llamadas. ¿Qué te motiva en el trabajo?

Trabajar aquí me ha hecho darme cuenta de que no tengo límites. Mi confianza está por las nubes. Sin embargo, cuando mi equipo dice que les facilito su trabajo, ese es el mejor regalo para mí.

¿Cuál es tu parte favorita de trabajar en Marriott?

Ser una líder. Nací para eso y ahora me siento reconocida por lo que hago. También que todo el mundo siempre dice ‘gracias’. Cuando mostramos gratitud unos a otros, nos entendemos todos.

¿Qué le dirías a alguien que está pensando en cambiar de carrera o que está buscando un trabajo como el tuyo?

Tomar riesgos. Si no tomas desafíos, nunca sabrás si eras capaz de hacerlo. A veces el miedo te paraliza y te dice ‘No, tengo miedo a fracasar’. Pero nunca sabrás si fracasarás si no lo intentas. Yo les aconsejaría que aceptaran el reto, que será difícil porque cualquier cambio es nuevo. Pero siempre, siempre, siempre arriésgate, porque si no, nunca sabrás si eso era para ti o no.
